30th Enfield Pageant of Motoring.

The club made the annual pilgrimage to the Enfield Pageant. I set the stand up on the Friday afternoon with help from Daniel Powell who arrived from Andover in his 1932 Ford Model 18 Victoria. Alan Biggs cut the grass on the stand Wednesday evening. The Enfield Society is on the field all the proceeding week of the show setting up Auto-jumble sites, marking out the club spaces and erecting Marquees. All this work only to get for the third year running the notorious deluging rain from early Sunday morning through to Monday afternoon. We did have a dry Sunday afternoon but still windy and cloudy. Saturday was the best day when Andy Maclean hosted the stand. Member Don Stewart brought along his 1935 Ford Model 48 Cabriolet and a gazebo which was erected but apparently blew down in the wind. Unlike Basingstoke this was a turbulent rally to say the least!  Thanks Don for your efforts. I was unable to attend on Saturday but we had a good showing of cars. Andy drove down with son Alex also a club member in his own right in the 1934 Ford Model 40 Phaeton, Gregg Shadbolt showed his black Ford Pilot together with Alan Biggs in his  black example. Ian Milburn arrived on the stand in his 1932 Ford Model 18 Victoria in Winter-leaf Brown. How often do you see two Victorias together on one stand?  Steve and Anita Norris arrived in their blue Ford Pilot with Gordon Bates also in a blue Ford Pilot. Frank Marriner showed his black 1951 Ford Custom Convertible.

John Hawes also arrived in his black Ford Pilot. I believe the only green Ford Pilot on the stand this year on the Saturday was John Edwards from Cambridge.

I was all set to go to Enfield in my Ford Pilot. This same car went to the first Enfield Pageant with me in 1978 so naturally I wanted to get to the thirtieth as I still own it, now in it`s 34th year of ownership with me incidentally. The rain was absolutely atrocious but I thought I am still going, so out of it`s comfortable garage it came with no let up in the weather. Once on site I was pleased, but it took until midday for the rain to stop. We still managed eight cars on the stand. I am surprised we managed this many as driving conditions were not good. Four of the cars were already on the stand from Saturday. Mick and Sally Gamble arrived from Leicester to help out on the stand together with Vic and Rosemary Cook. Modern cars were the order of the day, though, in these bad conditions. Brian Mayrick and Maurice Brown arrived in the blue Ford Pilot owned by Brian. This was the first time on a club show stand for Brian in his Pilot. Brian has been working to get his car reliable for the past year at least but has now achieved this and Sunday was certainly a good test for car and driver! Another man from South London arriving was Steve Garton in his green Ford Pilot with his son Alf.  So we were in business with some quality cars on the stand for people to see. It is essential though to have a good base on the stand and we must now consider buying a weatherproof tent that can be looked after and erected by club members. You certainly need somewhere to shelter from the rain! Nobody was willing to take over the caravan so a collapsible tent of good size must be the answer.

Other members who visited the stand were Stuart Wade, Guy Maylam, Gregg and Linda Wigmore, Gary and Julie Simpson, John Cowen, Colin Spong and new member joining us on the day Patrick Pattison.

Monday was even worse with continual rain, no cars turning up and I don`t blame them. Myself Alan Biggs, Daniel Powell and Gordon Bates packed the stand equipment into my van and I was back home before lunchtime.

Daniel and Alan ended up being the last members with a car on the stand, but we were all thoroughly soaked through.

I must thank again all members who turned out to support the club. Hopefully we have better days ahead this year.

Your rain soaked reporter,

Chris Sanders.
