Basingstoke Festival of Transport May 2006.
Organised by the Thorneycroft Society this is a Sunday only event held in the Memorial Park Basingstoke. The whole park is filled with vehicles of all types and is a must for vehicle enthusiasts to attend.
Ginger and Marilyn Dann organised the club stand at this event as they have for several years. We had our usual plot near the park entrance so if you are early enough it is possible to view all the vehicles as they drive in. The show seems to enjoy much local support. Not being local myself I had an early start from Essex in my Model 40 Ford but was pleasantly surprised to be at the event within two hours arriving at nine a.m.
Traffic seemed to be building after this time and several members encountered quite a queue entering the park. Set the alarm clock early next year lads!
I was pleased to see some new members on the stand this year. Gary and Dee Carter travelled from Deal in Kent to be at the show in their V8 Pilot. Interestingly enough this particular Pilot I had not seen for nearly thirty years. It belonged then to Harry and Val Court. Harry was only the second other person I had spoken too with a V8 Pilot back in 1974 when I first purchased my own Pilot. I am still in touch with Harry and Val to this day. Harry now owns a Model `T` Ford. Garry got to the show in two and a quarter hours. Just goes to show long distances can be travelled in the early morning!
New member Ernie Bullock was there in his recently acquired V8 Pilot. This particular Pilot was known to me years ago but has recently resurfaced when Ernie joined the club.
Other cars and members at the show were:
Gregg Shadbolt V8 Pilot, Bob Flint V8 Pilot, Nic Powell 1932 Model 18 Victoria, Rob and Rita Young 1951 Ford V8 Convertible, Dave and Valerie Leach V8 Pilot Woodie, Roger and Julie Wiltshire V8 Pilot Police Car. Richard and Carol Savin V8 Pilot, Terry and Cheryl Bridle 1940 Ford Model 01A Convertible. Ginger and Marilyn Dann with the aid of some friends put their usual super human effort into the event bringing along the club caravan together with their V8 Pilot green and blue saloons, Pilot Limmo, Beige and Blue V8 Pilot Reynolds Pickup Trucks together with a rare 1940 RO 1 T V8 Van. A unique vehicle Ginger has just got on the road. War time historians and Ford nomenclature buffs will know that RO 1 T = Rumania 1940 V8 Normal Control Truck. Apparently the story goes that Ford produced a batch of vehicles for Rumania during 1940 but for whatever reason this particular vehicle did not go. Other members at the show were Malcolm Cariven, Mick and Sally Gamble and Steven Owen. My apologies for any I have missed.
The show itself was excellent with everything to look at from early to late British, French and American cars, Military vehicles, Buses and Lorries. Ginger and Marilyn put on an excellent Barbeque for club members at the show. To put the icing on the cake we also won the club stand trophy presented to me by the Mayor of Basingstoke. So only May and the club has stated to pick up awards already.
A special thanks to Ginger and Marilyn. Those who missed the event put it in your Diaries for next year!
