EARLY FORD V8s &V12s

AT THE RALLY OF THE GIANTS-JULY 2009.

 

I always look forward to the Rally of the Giants. This rally has been staged every year since 1966 at various locations but now has been at Knebworth Park in Stevenage for many years. My wife Carol came with me in the 1933 Ford Model 40 a vehicle I have now owned for twenty years! It is always good to drive into Knebworth Park and see a brilliant display of American cars and meet people some of whom I have known for many years.

I parked in the Antique and Prohibition section for vehicles made before 1934. Three Ford V8 era cars in the line-up this year. Ian Milburn fielded his rare and immaculate 1932 Ford Model 18 Victoria. This car must be pretty unique in this condition in this country. Philip Albers also in a rare Ford, the four cylinder 1934 Model 40 Fordor Sedan, another immaculate car. My 1933 five window coupe completing the trio.

Moving on to the Roosevelt class cars now (1935-41) and we were lucky to have two 1938 Ford Model 81A cars. The Tudor Sedan of Anthony Stuart-Smith and the Fordor Sedan owned by Edwin  Phelps. A 1939 Ford was also spotted in this class. A large contingent of Lincoln Zephyrs was present and the most I have ever seen together.

 Six Lincoln Zephyrs on the show field in England is a very good turn out given that there were only 200 cars sold in the UK over a four year period!

Looking at the rest of the field and the Ford V8 Pilot area was well stocked with entrants. Eight cars were seen. The best turn out for a few years.

         For me a really good ROG. Where else can you see such good quality American cars from twenties to sixties with such a variety of USA manufactured vehicles to marvel over? Also we must not forget the hard working committee that made it all possible for us once again.
